Homemade Apple Crumble (V)

A crumble is a great way to use the oven heat after cooking your roast, simply add some fruit to a tray and add your crumble topping and place in the oven

Prep time: 15mins | Cook time: 45mins

Don’t crumble under pressure. There's simply nothing like a hearty crumble bursting with sweet fruit to round off your roast, and apple is the one we all love. There's plenty of lovely stuff you can put in a crumble – rolled oats, nuts or seeds, dried apricots for a gooey texture, or even alcohol for an indulgent treat. It's these little touches that will earn your crumble a special mention from guests.

Ingredients
  • 3 cooking apples
  • Squeeze of lemon juice
  • Crumble mixture
  • 1 tbsp demerara sugar
  • Custard to serve
Method
  1. Peel, core and cut apples up into little chunks
  2. TOBY TIP: A big squeeze of lemon juice will add flavour and stop your apples turning brown
  3. Put the fruit in a large pie dish
  4. Get your crumble mixture together, whether you've bought it or made it yourself. Carefully sprinkle it evenly over the fruit using a spoon
  5. Don't press down on the mixture or you'll end up with a big biscuit.
  6. If any apple is sticking through, leave it to caramelise
  7. Sprinkle demerara sugar over the top
  8. Bake for 45 minutes in a pre-heated oven at 200C, or until the fruit is cooked and the top of the crumble is crunchy
  9. Serve with a generous helping of custard
